Yoga in Cusco - Peru

You are invited to practice yoga at Paramatma Holistic Healing

Yoga Teacher: Rachel Durling

Rachel's love of movement began at an early age when she saw her first dance performance at age 6 and begged her parents for lessons. She then went on to study classical ballet, modern dance, jazz, and improvisation in New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore for 12 years before dancing professionally in San Francisco from 2006-2008. Rachel began her yoga practice with the simple desire to condition the body and it has since helped her grow mentally and spiritually in ways she had never expected. She received her Ashtanga Yoga teacher certification under Chaitanya Nitay Das in February 2009 and began teaching at Yoga Inbound in January 2010.

Her classes combine a variety of movement and asanas, with emphasis on the mind-body connection and the technical aspects of building a strong practice. She is grateful to have the opportunity to share her practice here in Cusco - Peru and hopes that others will be able to cultivate more love for themselves, their environments, and all other living things by sharing theirs.  Namaste.

The Cusco Experience - Energetic Healing

For thousands of years the Cusco region has been regarded as a vortex of spiritual energy. Today, visitors from the world over travel high into the Andes to taste it's spectacular aesthetic and mystical beauty. A sensation of inner peace accompanied with a feeling of connectedness with the outer environment and it's living organisms can be found here in Cusco. Some may it find by marveling at the awe-inspiring ancient architecture, conversing with the eclectic mix of natives, residents, and travelers that populate the Cusco region, or quietly taking in the powerful yet humbling natural splendor of the mountainous landscape.

At Paramatma Holistic Healing we believe that a balance of mind, body, and spirit is essential to getting the most out of your stay in Cusco. The stresses of traveling and acclimatizing to the 3,300 meter (11,000 feet) altitude can hinder your ability to access the magic of Cusco as described above. We would like to help you have the best experience possible here in Cusco by alleviating the mental and physical stresses that prohibit you from accessing a core feeling of balance and connectedness. Chakra Balancing - Cusco, Perú.

The Chakras, first mentioned in the ancient Vedas, the Hindu books of knowledge, is the name given to the seven main energy centers of our body.  These swirling vortexes of energy regulate the energy flow throughout our bodies. These centers open and shut depending on what we are feeling and thinking. Chakras are not physical objects that can be seen, but they are an integral part of our life force keeping our whole mind and body working together. They are located at different points throughout the physical body and are associated with particular parts of the body. Every sense, feeling and experience is connected to a specific chakra.  When you are stressed about something, the chakra itself can become unbalancing and this manifests itself as illness in your physical body.  For your mind, emotions and physical body to be working together in total harmony, the chakras need to be spinning at the correct frequency. To become healthy again, or to maintain a healthy balancing, these chakras need to be balancing from time to time.

A Reiki Master can balance the chakras by sending healing Reiki energy to the client.  The practitioner channels universal energy through the crown chakra and out the hands.  The energy is received by the client and travels to the area most needed in the body.  The practitioner may or may not lay hands on the client (varies with client preference).  Hands are held over or on each chakra, for a period of a time. Sometimes, messages are received for the client from spirit guides around the client. The client may not notice anything is happening, but usually a period of deep relaxation is experienced, followed by a sense of peacefulness, vitality, clear-thinking and renewed hope or inspiration.  Sometimes the client feels an emotional release and may feel exhausted, or on the other hand may feel revitalized and happy.  Chakra balancing may help those going through stress, emotional issues, family crisis, loss, depression, confusion, illness or hopelessness.  Reiki energy and chakra balancing  is safe and comfortable for any age, pregnancy or illness.

Nutrition for Hearing the Harmony of Life

By Patrick Bernard

Adapted from Patrick's new book, Music as Yoga - Discover the healing power of sound

From Living Nutrition Magazine, Vol. 17

Eating a diet of fruit, vegetables and sprouts elevates the body and mind and enables us to listen to the great universal vibrations which are all around us, but which we cannot hear when our ears are obstructed with fermentations resulting from the digestion of animal flesh. Carnivorous humanity becomes powerless to perceive the higher truths of the self and is prevented from gaining access to the influence of miraculous celestial vibrations. "Gastronomic" dishes, laden with pain, make the human being deaf to the subtle call of the soul's music.

By following a nutritional regimen that is in harmony with the laws of the universe and respectful of life, we open ourselves to the highest sensory perceptions and experiences. We penetrate the infinite world of virtue. Our eyes no longer see the same colors. Our ears detect nature?s most subtle sounds. The wind in the clouds, the breeze murmuring among the leaves, and the rhythm of the fountain become the most wonderful of symphonies. The doors of contemplation and meditation are opened to us and we discover the astonishing music of the inner self. Not only does our food intake affect our digestion and in turn our listening, but what we listen to while we eat can also influence our digestion.

In his book The Doctor Prescribes Music, physicist Edward Podolsky considers the value of listening to music during meals. In his opinion, beautiful music played during a meal. In his opinion, beautiful music played during a meal is of great help in facilitating the digestive process. In his work he describes a scientific discovery: the principal nerve of the eardrum (middle ear) ends at the center of the tongue; it is linked to the brain, and reacts to both taste and sound impulse.

Commenting on the scientific report, Hal A. Lingerman, in The Healing Energies of Music , states that it is no longer possible to ignore the close relationship between healthy food and appropriate music. It is not pure chance that in ancient cultures, expert musicians were invited to play soft and pleasant melodies during meals and feasts.

When unpleasant emotions are felt, the pylorus, a muscular structure situated at the base of the stomach, closes. The contents of the stomach can no longer reach the bowel. There follows a bloated sensation, a heaviness that occurs while digestive acids stop working. The result is drowsiness and irritability.

Professor Pldolsky notes, "Music is the best antidote for unpleasantness at the dinner table. When there is music to be heard, there is an outpouring of gastric juices. Food is properly digested and it passes from the stomach into the duodenum through a wide-open pylorus."

During meals, music should be simple and joyful, with neither great contrast nor intellectual or emotional complexities. Hal Lingerman particularly recommends the flute and the harp for this. Personally, I have observed that the music of the Versailles School , which includes the work of Lully, Couperin and Delalande (Symphonies for the King's Dinners), creates an atmosphere of peace, joy and majesty that is well-fitted to accompany the sacred act of nourishment.

The Vedic scriptures proclaim, "Spiritual awakening begins with the tongue." By transforming the otherwise banal act of eating into a conscious offering to the Divine, the more sordid impulses of the senses can be sublimated. Through the nature of our nutrition and the attitude with which we feed ourselves, we can either open or close the crystalline doors of the music of the soul.

Virtuous nutrition can facilitate the refinement of hearing and listening. The Bhagavad Gita stipulates that spiritual nutrition has the power to purify the sensory organs, to produce fine cerebral tissues and to clarify thoughts. Spiritual nutrition goes beyond simple vegetarianism and lays claims to the purifying power of love: "If, with love and devotion, I am offered a leaf, a flower, a fruit or some water, I will accept it."

Here, the ultimate devotional aspect of the God force, Krishna , the mystical poet of the Bhagavad Gita , reveals that the sanctification of food opens the doors to the inner sound. The main factor, the principal ingredient in the preparation of such a selfless gesture, is in our thirst for absolute Love.

Sound Therapy - Harmonizing the mind, body, and spirit in Cusco - Peru

It is a known fact that all matter that exists in the universe does so on a vibratory basis. Our own bodies are living evidence of this fact. Each cell in our body vibrates at its own frequency.

These trillions of cells, backed by the rhythm of our heartbeat, form a complex symphony that carries out all of our physical, mental, and emotional functions. Here in Cusco - Peru, you will have a special Sound Therapy session.

Most of us have experienced a relaxing, peaceful feeling, or an energizing euphoria when listening to music we enjoy. This is our cells reaction to the sound we are experiencing. I use the word “experiencing” instead of “hearing” because we do not just hear sound, we actually experience the frequency of it’s vibration with every cell in our body. This is why Beethoven was still able to compose, conduct, and perform his greatest works after becoming completely deaf. Conversely, sound can affect us in a negative way as well. The harsh sound of fingernails scraping a chalkboard causes our bodies to naturally cringe.

Our physical and mental health is greatly affected and also measured by frequency of vibrations. Often we know when a friend is physically or emotionally ill based on the sound of their voice. Doctors measure the mental health of a patient by examining vibratory frequencies in the brain.

Sound therapy is a holistic medicinal technique that affects the frequency patterns of an individual in a positive way. The sound therapy practitioner uses various instruments to produce frequencies that bring the cells of the body into a harmonious state, focusing on specific energy centers in the body and bringing them into balance with one another. The effects of sound therapy treatment includes increased vitality, circulation, calmness, personal growth and empowerment, energy, balanced emotions, and a deeper connection to the central energy source that produces the vibratory frequencies within ourselves and our environments.

Reiki Therapy - Accessing the energy of the Andes

Have you ever experienced a queasy feeling in your stomach when you are nervous? How about a lump in your throat when you are feeling negative emotions but can't find the words to express yourself? It is no coincidence that these physical ailments are accompanied by mental and emotional stresses.

Each of us has 7 main energy centers in our bodies called Chakras. Every day we stimulate these Chakras consciously or unconsciously through our thoughts, actions, interactions, senses, physicality, and environment. This stimulation can manifest energy in negative or positive form. When the Chakras are unbalanced or blocked, our bodies are assaulted with a myriad of physical ailments ranging from a minor headache to heart disease. While traveling it is natural to experience physical, emotion al, and spiritual highs and lows when confronted with new places, people, languages, challenges, and adventures. Even if we are having an overall positive experience, it can still be difficult to feel centered in ourselves.

Reiki is a natural method of healing through the use of Universal Life Force Energy. The reiki practitioner functions as a porthole to this energy, enabling the Universal Life Force Energy to flow to the recipients Chakras, thus bring harmony to the individuals mind body and spirit. Reiki can help with any problem an individual may have because the energy is fluid and malleable. Cusco is the perfect place to experience reiki therapy because it is a powerful center of universal energy.

With respect to Reiki:

Regrettably, I have seen many people throughout the years making a business of selling Reiki certifications who are in reality pseudo-teachers of Reiki. These “teachers” use drugs, alcohol, and/or eat meat, thinking that Reiki can purify their minds and bodies regardless of what they consume, and they go on to teach this to their students. This is very harmful because the energy of Prana, or Reiki, functions according to more subtle laws, such as the law of action and reaction known as Karma in Sanskrit.

What I learned is that any person can transmit Reiki, as long as his actions are pure and lives according to universal love. This journey is difficult for many because it orders detachment from many things. A reiki practitioner is a servant of the Supreme Love, therefore he must not contaminate his body and mind in order to transmit Prana in its purest form to the recipient.

Massage Therapy in Cusco - Take care of your body in the mountains

Treat yourself to a massage with our experienced massage therapist here in Cusco. Your body will thank you.

Whether you spend 4 rigorous days on the Inka Trail to Machu Picchu, hike to the ruins of Saccsaywaman, or spend your days roaming the streets of Cusco, your body is bound to feel stress from exertion at a high altitude, where less oxygen reaches the muscles, causing them to be tender and sore.

Our bodies are our most valuable possessions and must be cared for properly. Just a musical instrument needs to be in tune to produce a beautiful sound, our bodies are physical instruments that need to be tuned properly in order to allow us to live our lives fully and vibrantly.

There are many types of massage. I will be able to help you discover the type that benefits you the most. Here is a list of the massages that I offer.

Thai yoga massage is an ancient healing art, which has its roots in India and is widely used in Thailand and Western countries today. The practitioner guides the recipient through a series of yoga postures while palming and thumbing along the body's energy lines where” Prana “ the life force energy flows.. Blockages in this life force may cause aches, pains and even disease. The gentle stretching movements, energy line and pressure point work produces a uniquely relaxing yet energizing and highly effective therapeutic treatment, that relieves muscular tension, improves circulation, boosts the immune system and balances the body energetically. Thai Yoga Massage is ideal for anyone regardless of their level of flexibility.

Thai Yoga Massage is performed on a mat on the floor; both client and practitioner are dressed in comfortable clothing allowing ease of movement and flexibility. Thai yoga massage does not use oils or creams.

Shiatsu massage - Also known as Acupressure is a Japanese finger pressure massage technique. The therapist applies pressure using thumbs, fingers and palms of hands to specific areas of the body, to unblock energy and enable the optimal flow of Ki (Chi) or life force energy. The benefits include deep muscle relaxation and improved circulation. Comfortable clothing is worn and generally Shiatsu is carried out on a futon.

Swedish massage - A combination of Swedish (gentle, long strokes of light pressure), Petrissage (gentle kneading) and trigger point therapy (firm pressure on specific tight areas). Great for general relaxation and muscular tension release.

Deep tissue massage - Is a massage designed to manipulate deeply into the tissues to unblock and release chronic tension which accumulates in the muscles. Stretching, mobilization techniques and various massage movements are used to rebalance and restore body’s vitality.

Full body massage - Using a medium to heavy pressure for tired, aching muscles; this massage will help to break down small knots and tense muscles.

Sports massage therapy - Helps alleviate stress from the body due to strenuous exercise. The physiological benefits of the massage include improved blood and lymph circulation, muscle relaxation. It relieves stiffness and soreness and adds to more flexibility with less potential for further injury.

Watsu is a gentle form of body therapy performed in warm water, (around 35°C.) It combines elements of massage, joint mobilization, shiatsu, muscle stretching and dance. The receiver is continuously supported while being floated, cradled, rocked and stretched. The deeply relaxing effects of warm water and nurturing support, combine with Watsu's movements, stretches, massage and point work, to create a bodywork with a range of therapeutic benefits and potential healing on many levels.
