Yoga in Cusco - Peru

You are invited to practice yoga at Paramatma Holistic Healing

Yoga Teacher: Rachel Durling

Rachel's love of movement began at an early age when she saw her first dance performance at age 6 and begged her parents for lessons. She then went on to study classical ballet, modern dance, jazz, and improvisation in New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore for 12 years before dancing professionally in San Francisco from 2006-2008. Rachel began her yoga practice with the simple desire to condition the body and it has since helped her grow mentally and spiritually in ways she had never expected. She received her Ashtanga Yoga teacher certification under Chaitanya Nitay Das in February 2009 and began teaching at Yoga Inbound in January 2010.

Her classes combine a variety of movement and asanas, with emphasis on the mind-body connection and the technical aspects of building a strong practice. She is grateful to have the opportunity to share her practice here in Cusco - Peru and hopes that others will be able to cultivate more love for themselves, their environments, and all other living things by sharing theirs. Yoga teacher trainer.

 Namaste.

Volunteering at Finca Vrindavan Eco Yoga Farm in Ecuador

Thank your for your interest in our volunteer program at Vrindavan! We are looking forward to sharing our way of life with you and learning from each other. In Vrindavan we practice a holistic lifestyle focusing on spiritual development through yoga, vedic philosophy, vegetarian cooking, mantra meditations, sustainable living practices and connection with nature.

Vrindavan is nestled in the high jungle over a wide acreage of primary forest, cultivated land, rivers, and waterfalls. The weather changes every day but for the most part it is neither hot nor cold, with frequent rains giving life to a variety of native flora and fauna.
We hope that the beautiful surrounding environment and people you meet here will inspire you to make the most out of your stay.
An additional note to volunteers who have not previously traveled in Ecuador: Some travelers from Europe and North America become ill when traveling in Ecuador. So we encourage volunteers to bring pro bio-tics to help their digestive system adjust to the food and water in Ecuador and your own anti-bacterial hand soap.
Please remember that Ecuador is a Spanish speaking country and most Ecuatorians do not speak English. This includes most of the residents at Vrindavan. Usually there will be other volunteers there who speak English but it is strongly advised that you have basic knowledge of Spanish in order to communicate with the residents. You will find your stay much more enjoyable if you have this ability.
One last thing: If you are not familiar with Vaishnavism, please read a little information about it before coming. We never force anyone to adapt our philosophy or way of life, we just ask you to please respect our choices. Every night in the temple we have a musical ceremony followed by a reading and discussion from a Vedic text. We invite you to join us and learn about Vaisnava culture. This does not mean we expect you to adopt these principles or convert your beliefs; we simply want to share with you our way of thinking.
Here you have an interesting video from the founder of this Eco-Village and many more eco-villages in South America. : http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5294870220048947618#

In addition we are working on cultivating the land and hope to develop new projects soon to make our village more sustainable; such as a hydro-electric system for light and a biodigestor to make gas. We are also open to different skills and creative ideas you wish to share with us, as well as other things you may want to offer like language classes, art workshops, etc.

Ways of Acquiring Knowledge and Faith

Based on the knowledge of the Vedas, we have a practical understanding of how and why Western psychologists are going wrong in their understanding of the phenomena of consciousness all together.

There are different levels of consciousness and different ways of acquiring consciousness and knowledge. Presently we have a more or less limited awareness of reality, according to the knowledge we have acquired up to now. Depending on the way knowledge is acquired, our awareness will grow accordingly. The three ways of acquiring knowledge are:

Direct perception

This is called pratyaksa or direct sensual perception. Being to certain extents conditioned by the physical experience of life, we do not have a direct perception of consciousness. Rather we are bound to look upon everything as a kind of physical phenomena. We can only perceive the gross reality by smelling, tasting, seeing, touching and hearing about the same qualities of the manifested world. Thus we can never adopt an impartial vision about faith and the soul in terms of relevance. We are confined and imprisoned by the shackles of our senses. We can understand this by using the example of the eye. Our eye can not see things which are very far away. At the same time it can not see things, which are very close, like the eye lids. In other words there is only a certain spectrum of experience and this is very limited and gross. Therefore faith, soul, creator, etc. can be considered by some people as fabrications of the human mind.

Deduction, logic and comparison

Above the sensual perception, there is the way of expanding one’s awareness through experimentation, comparison, logic and study. This process is called anumana.

A very important question in this process is the causal effect. What causes what, and what are the effects of different interactions in the physical world? The mind and intellect are playing the most prominent role in anumana. As this process is based on the experience of our physical senses or the thoughts and knowledge of others (which is again at some point based on sensual perception), it is again limited, even though some deeper awareness can be there.

Anumana allows us at least to take into consideration that there are things which we cannot see. Still it is not broad-minded enough to simply accept information, which could be revealed in one way or another from a higher dimension. This is a symptom of weak faith. As the process is very speculative, we can never come to the final conclusion about higher truths of existence. Revelations from higher dimensions are as real as there is a cause for every dimension. As there is a father of every son, there is also a creator of everything created. It is not an unreasonable proposal at all.

Through spiritual practice and inner quest

When we enter into the third way of acquiring knowledge, which is called sabda, we see it confirmed that there is knowledge of great importance, which cannot be verified with pratyaksa nor with anumana. Such type of knowledge can be received and realized only through faith and spiritual practice and it can be further established by prayer or inner conversation with the Master within all of us.

On the platform of anumana we tend to speculate a little bit about everything. Eventually in the end we cannot develop a real determination or strong faith of any kind. We tend to see everything in relative terms, and to such a degree that even our theoretical knowledge of positive religious and moral principles is of no avail to situate us in a healthy harmonious situation.

Sabda on the contrary is the divine revelation as documented in the holy Vedic scriptures. Every principle of truth is announced therein. Receiving sabda from the appropriate source brings about a growth of awareness and allows us to do as much additional research into transcendence as we like, or until we are satisfied with the result.

We can see that there are tremendous differences of awareness of reality in accordance with the faith we have, and resulting from that, differences in the system in acquiring knowledge we use. By helping to expand another person’s awareness, we can help them to solve problems. One may be dreaming of a lion and being scared, but as soon as the person wakes up, they will realize that that there is no reason to be afraid.

In the same way by expanding our awareness towards the understanding of the all-good and all-meaningful purpose of life and existence we can overcome the difficulties of our present situation.

By understanding the different levels of individual consciousness and how this consciousness is being formed by different social circumstances of life, and at the same time how it influences and forms the social environment, we learn how to help people allow positive influences to enter their lives and how to help them to protect themselves from destructive influences.

No environment in this world is absolutely good or bad. We have only to find out how to adjust properly. In other words there is no perfect world, as long as we do not rise to a perfect level of awareness and appropriate action.

In India we can see, for example, how the specific ritualism, popular teachers and popular interpretations of teachings impress people. They impress them so much that sometimes apparently ridiculous ideas, which contradict the very same sacred revelations they are based upon, are deeply ingrained into the faulty behavior of individuals.

For example the Vedas state very clearly that the human being should be considered exclusively for their personal qualities and by their work, not by their birth. The very so-called preachers of Vedic wisdom, the Brahmins, have a strong current insisting to the contrary. They claim that only by being born in a Brahmin family, one gets entitled to act as a Brahmin in society.

It is mainly the interest for name, fame and money which spoils the social atmosphere and which creates all the disturbances on an individual as well as on a collective level. These lower interests appear sometimes as materialistic concepts and sometimes they hide themselves behind the banner of religion. Our environment is loaded with preconceived faulty notions of the past, and all of them are the basis for the faulty assumptions and teachings of the present.

Doubt and faith

In the spiritual quest and in the search for true health, it is really important to question all values. We have to personally knock at the door of truth within our heart and keep our eyes open for sensible trustworthy revelations, as we go through our natural process of accepting and rejecting, between doubt and faith. As naturally as there must be doubt there can also be faith, the opposite of doubting. Doubting has been established within the creation to help us find what we can trust in.

When we find what we can trust in, at that moment we can exercise the doubting of the doubting process as such and embrace our faith whole-heartedly. We may call this process anumana with the support of sabda. “Is there still doubt about how we can have full faith?”

The power of discrimination is God-given and faith is the crown-jewel of having properly exercised our evaluation.

Doubt and faith have accompanied us since the childhood. As a child we did not say that we trusted a certain person. We said rather or not we liked or disliked a person. If you liked someone you would go anywhere with them, despite what they might say to you. And if you did not like someone, even if it was your father or mother, you would not submit to their directions, at least internally.

Therefore OIDA-therapy increases faith and decreases doubt so that a you can search for a healthy environment of individuals, where you can happily put your full faith. Such an environment will help you to become healthier or more spiritually advanced, if you prefer to see it that way.

Taking Science on Faith

By PAUL DAVIES

Published: November 24, 2007 (New York Times) Tempe, Ariz.

SCIENCE, we are repeatedly told, is the most reliable form of knowledge about the world because it is based on testable hypotheses. Religion, by contrast, is based on faith. The term “doubting Thomas” well illustrates the difference. In science, a healthy skepticism is a professional necessity, whereas in religion, having belief without evidence is regarded as a virtue.

The problem with this neat separation into “non-overlapping magisteria,” as Stephen Jay Gould described science and religion, is that science has its own faith-based belief system. All science proceeds on the assumption that nature is ordered in a rational and intelligible way. You couldn’t be a scientist if you thought the universe was a meaningless jumble of odds and ends haphazardly juxtaposed. When physicists probe to a deeper level of subatomic structure, or astronomers extend the reach of their instruments, they expect to encounter additional elegant mathematical order. And so far this faith has been justified.

The most refined expression of the rational intelligibility of the cosmos is found in the laws of physics, the fundamental rules on which nature runs. The laws of gravitation and electromagnetism, the laws that regulate the world within the atom, the laws of motion — all are expressed as tidy mathematical relationships. But where do these laws come from? And why do they have the form that they do?

When I was a student, the laws of physics were regarded as completely off limits. The job of the scientist, we were told, is to discover the laws and apply them, not inquire into their provenance. The laws were treated as “given” — imprinted on the universe like a maker’s mark at the moment of cosmic birth — and fixed forevermore. Therefore, to be a scientist, you had to have faith that the universe is governed by dependable, immutable, absolute, universal, mathematical laws of an unspecified origin. You’ve got to believe that these laws won’t fail, that we won’t wake up tomorrow to find heat flowing from cold to hot, or the speed of light changing by the hour.

Over the years I have often asked my physicist colleagues why the laws of physics are what they are. The answers vary from “that’s not a scientific question” to “nobody knows.” The favorite reply is, “There is no reason they are what they are — they just are.” The idea that the laws exist reasonlessly is deeply anti-rational. After all, the very essence of a scientific explanation of some phenomenon is that the world is ordered logically and that there are reasons things are as they are. If one traces these reasons all the way down to the bedrock of reality — the laws of physics — only to find that reason then deserts us, it makes a mockery of science.

Can the mighty edifice of physical order we perceive in the world about us ultimately be rooted in reasonless absurdity? If so, then nature is a fiendishly clever bit of trickery: meaninglessness and absurdity somehow masquerading as ingenious order and rationality.

Although scientists have long had an inclination to shrug aside such questions concerning the source of the laws of physics, the mood has now shifted considerably. Part of the reason is the growing acceptance that the emergence of life in the universe, and hence the existence of observers like ourselves, depends rather sensitively on the form of the laws. If the laws of physics were just any old ragbag of rules, life would almost certainly not exist.

A second reason that the laws of physics have now been brought within the scope of scientific inquiry is the realization that what we long regarded as absolute and universal laws might not be truly fundamental at all, but more like local bylaws. They could vary from place to place on a mega-cosmic scale. A God’s-eye view might reveal a vast patchwork quilt of universes, each with its own distinctive set of bylaws. In this “multiverse,” life will arise only in those patches with bio-friendly bylaws, so it is no surprise that we find ourselves in a Goldilocks universe — one that is just right for life. We have selected it by our very existence.

The multiverse theory is increasingly popular, but it doesn’t so much explain the laws of physics as dodge the whole issue. There has to be a physical mechanism to make all those universes and bestow bylaws on them. This process will require its own laws, or meta-laws. Where do they come from? The problem has simply been shifted up a level from the laws of the universe to the meta-laws of the multiverse.

Clearly, then, both religion and science are founded on faith — namely, on belief in the existence of something outside the universe, like an unexplained God or an unexplained set of physical laws, maybe even a huge ensemble of unseen universes, too. For that reason, both monotheistic religion and orthodox science fail to provide a complete account of physical existence.

This shared failing is no surprise, because the very notion of physical law is a theological one in the first place, a fact that makes many scientists squirm. Isaac Newton first got the idea of absolute, universal, perfect, immutable laws from the Christian doctrine that God created the world and ordered it in a rational way. Christians envisage God as upholding the natural order from beyond the universe, while physicists think of their laws as inhabiting an abstract transcendent realm of perfect mathematical relationships.

And just as Christians claim that the world depends utterly on God for its existence, while the converse is not the case, so physicists declare a similar asymmetry: the universe is governed by eternal laws (or meta-laws), but the laws are completely impervious to what happens in the universe.

It seems to me there is no hope of ever explaining why the physical universe is as it is so long as we are fixated on immutable laws or meta-laws that exist reasonlessly or are imposed by divine providence. The alternative is to regard the laws of physics and the universe they govern as part and parcel of a unitary system, and to be incorporated together within a common explanatory scheme.

In other words, the laws should have an explanation from within the universe and not involve appealing to an external agency. The specifics of that explanation are a matter for future research. But until science comes up with a testable theory of the laws of the universe, its claim to be free of faith is manifestly bogus.

Nutrition for Hearing the Harmony of Life

By Patrick Bernard

Adapted from Patrick's new book, Music as Yoga - Discover the healing power of sound

From Living Nutrition Magazine, Vol. 17

Eating a diet of fruit, vegetables and sprouts elevates the body and mind and enables us to listen to the great universal vibrations which are all around us, but which we cannot hear when our ears are obstructed with fermentations resulting from the digestion of animal flesh. Carnivorous humanity becomes powerless to perceive the higher truths of the self and is prevented from gaining access to the influence of miraculous celestial vibrations. "Gastronomic" dishes, laden with pain, make the human being deaf to the subtle call of the soul's music.

By following a nutritional regimen that is in harmony with the laws of the universe and respectful of life, we open ourselves to the highest sensory perceptions and experiences. We penetrate the infinite world of virtue. Our eyes no longer see the same colors. Our ears detect nature?s most subtle sounds. The wind in the clouds, the breeze murmuring among the leaves, and the rhythm of the fountain become the most wonderful of symphonies. The doors of contemplation and meditation are opened to us and we discover the astonishing music of the inner self. Not only does our food intake affect our digestion and in turn our listening, but what we listen to while we eat can also influence our digestion.

In his book The Doctor Prescribes Music, physicist Edward Podolsky considers the value of listening to music during meals. In his opinion, beautiful music played during a meal. In his opinion, beautiful music played during a meal is of great help in facilitating the digestive process. In his work he describes a scientific discovery: the principal nerve of the eardrum (middle ear) ends at the center of the tongue; it is linked to the brain, and reacts to both taste and sound impulse.

Commenting on the scientific report, Hal A. Lingerman, in The Healing Energies of Music , states that it is no longer possible to ignore the close relationship between healthy food and appropriate music. It is not pure chance that in ancient cultures, expert musicians were invited to play soft and pleasant melodies during meals and feasts.

When unpleasant emotions are felt, the pylorus, a muscular structure situated at the base of the stomach, closes. The contents of the stomach can no longer reach the bowel. There follows a bloated sensation, a heaviness that occurs while digestive acids stop working. The result is drowsiness and irritability.

Professor Pldolsky notes, "Music is the best antidote for unpleasantness at the dinner table. When there is music to be heard, there is an outpouring of gastric juices. Food is properly digested and it passes from the stomach into the duodenum through a wide-open pylorus."

During meals, music should be simple and joyful, with neither great contrast nor intellectual or emotional complexities. Hal Lingerman particularly recommends the flute and the harp for this. Personally, I have observed that the music of the Versailles School , which includes the work of Lully, Couperin and Delalande (Symphonies for the King's Dinners), creates an atmosphere of peace, joy and majesty that is well-fitted to accompany the sacred act of nourishment.

The Vedic scriptures proclaim, "Spiritual awakening begins with the tongue." By transforming the otherwise banal act of eating into a conscious offering to the Divine, the more sordid impulses of the senses can be sublimated. Through the nature of our nutrition and the attitude with which we feed ourselves, we can either open or close the crystalline doors of the music of the soul.

Virtuous nutrition can facilitate the refinement of hearing and listening. The Bhagavad Gita stipulates that spiritual nutrition has the power to purify the sensory organs, to produce fine cerebral tissues and to clarify thoughts. Spiritual nutrition goes beyond simple vegetarianism and lays claims to the purifying power of love: "If, with love and devotion, I am offered a leaf, a flower, a fruit or some water, I will accept it."

Here, the ultimate devotional aspect of the God force, Krishna , the mystical poet of the Bhagavad Gita , reveals that the sanctification of food opens the doors to the inner sound. The main factor, the principal ingredient in the preparation of such a selfless gesture, is in our thirst for absolute Love.

At Cunningham Creek Elementary, music therapy makes difference for special-needs students

Amanda Hunter, 11, is a typical middle-schooler, sporting a Jonas Brothers backpack and gushing over the group. But for Amanda, music holds more meaning than a simple boy-band crush. “Music helps me with multiplication,” the wheelchair-bound Amanda said with a proud smile. “Music is awesome. I learn a lot from it.”

Amanda is one of 250 special-needs students at Cunningham Creek Elementary School in Northwest St. Johns County. She is also part of the music therapy program at Cunningham Creek, the only school in the county that offers it, said Principal Betsy Wierda. Music therapist Minda Gordon said this is the fourth year since she began the program at the school and she has seen drastic changes in students such as Amanda. “There were students who we didn’t even think could talk. Now they dance and sing,” Gordon said. “We found that if you raise the bar for these students, they’ll jump it.”

I would highly recommend to anyone a treatment with Druva. I had a massage and reiki combined session and felt beautifully relaxed afterwards. He is a natural healer and gives of his love and energy unconditionally.. Druva, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the warmth and hospitality that you showed me during my stay at Ecotruly Eco Village. You are a truly amazing soul and I feel blessed to have met you. You immediately made me feel at ease - when I was new to a strange place. I have many fond memories from my stay at Eco truly and learn so much from you. Hopefully I can return someday. Druva, I wish you well.. !

Hi Druva, I just wanted to say a huge thank you for your massage. It was truly an amazing experience. You made me feel totally relaxed and very comfortable during the massage and I came away feeling energized and really comfortable in my skin. This was one of the best holistic treatments I've ever experienced and I'll definitely be recommending this to friends and fellow travelers. I wish you all the best and do stay in touch, Love

I visited Cusco to trek the Inca trail. I arrived a few days earlier and spent my time wandering around the beautiful streets and breathing in the mountain air. On every street corner women were handing out leaflets advertising massages, some ridiculously cheap. I didn't indulge in a massage at this time as I thought this treat would be better enjoyed on my return from the trek through the Andes. Sure enough, a week later, after trekking 45k through the Andes, my body was crying out for a massage. A friend of mine had previously visited Peru and had given me the name and number of Druva. On her recommendation, I decided to visit Druva and get my massage with him.

Druva was slightly more expensive than some of the very cheap deals being canvassed on the street corners, but from speaking to other travelers, and from my own experience, i am very glad I paid the extra money. I had an hours massage with Druva. Before the massage he asked whether I had any particular areas that were causing problems. Unfortunately I have had lower back pain for some time and also suffer from very knotted shoulders. Druva worked on me for an hour. The results were fantastic. I could feel him locate each knot and work it out. He was thorough and firm, just what I needed. After the massage, Druva, helped me stretch. We had already discussed how I liked my massages, I'm not one for a light handed touch. i said I wanted a deep tissue massage and this is what I got, although I'm sure Druva could apply a light touch too, if this is what I wanted. The only drawback of my massage is that I had it at the center, next time, I would take advantage of the call out service - that way I could remain in my lovely state of relaxation without having to trudge back up the hill to my hotel!

I met Druva in the EcoTruly Park near Lima. I immediatly felt comfortable with him, and soon discover that he was also very interresting to talk with. He did a reiki session to me and it was an amazing experience. I felt good about myself and the present, somehow spiritualy risen. I would probably never forget it :) Im really glad I met such a wonderful spirit as Druva and hope our path will cross again at some point. Cheers my friend.

Hi Druva,
Thanks again for the reiki treatment in Cusco ! It was a wonderful experience and helped me restore and readjust energy imbalances within my body. The feeling of tranquility that follows a reiki treatment is what continues to bring me back to this therapy. I also really enjoyed the sound therapy experience; it seemed like the most appropriate way to end the reiki session!
Thanks again,
Brian
